Commercial Plumbing & Mechanical
Healthcare facility plumbing and mechanical services.
Mechora provides commercial plumbing for hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and medical offices — thermostatic mixing valves, backflow prevention, hot water compliance, Legionella risk management, and infection-control plumbing across Ontario.
Industry Overview
Healthcare plumbing serves vulnerable people. The requirements reflect that.
Plumbing in healthcare facilities — hospitals, long-term care homes, medical clinics, rehabilitation centres — operates under a more demanding set of requirements than any other commercial building type. The population being served includes elderly residents, immunocompromised patients, and individuals with conditions that make them particularly susceptible to waterborne pathogens and scalding injuries.
Thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) at patient-accessible fixtures are required in long-term care and high-risk settings to prevent scalding while maintaining hot water temperatures high enough in the distribution system to inhibit Legionella bacteria growth. Backflow prevention must meet the highest hazard classification. Hot water system temperatures must be actively managed and documented. Any new work in these facilities is done against Ontario Plumbing Code requirements and the standards that govern the specific facility type.
Mechora Group brings licensed commercial plumbing expertise to healthcare facility work. We do not provide regulatory or clinical advice — we implement plumbing systems in compliance with the Ontario Plumbing Code and the scope of work specified by the facility's engineers or consultants. Services
Commercial plumbing for healthcare facilities.
Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV)
Supply and installation of TMV valves at patient-accessible and resident-accessible fixtures. TMVs blend hot and cold water to a safe, stable temperature — preventing scalding while allowing the system to maintain higher supply temperatures for Legionella control.
Commercial InstallationsBackflow Prevention
Installation, testing, and annual certification of backflow preventers — required at the highest protection level for healthcare facilities. Compliance documentation for the facility's regulatory file.
Backflow PreventionHot Water System Maintenance
Commercial water heater maintenance, storage tank inspection, and domestic hot water recirculation system service — ensuring system temperatures stay in the range required to minimize Legionella risk while staying within safe delivery limits at fixtures.
Commercial Water HeaterPlumbing Fixture Service
Sensor faucets, hands-free fixtures, clinical sinks, and utility sink repairs in operating healthcare facilities. Work coordinated with facility management to meet infection control requirements and minimize disruption to clinical areas.
Request ServiceDrain & Waste System Service
Drain cleaning and inspection for clinical, kitchen, and common-area drain systems. Floor drain maintenance in clinical areas. Sewer camera inspection for building drains.
Commercial Drain CleaningMaintenance Programs
Scheduled maintenance programs for healthcare facility plumbing — backflow testing, TMV inspection and calibration, hot water system checks, and drain maintenance — with documentation for the facility's compliance records.
Maintenance ProgramsKey Requirements
What healthcare plumbing compliance involves.
TMV Valves & Scalding Prevention
Patient-accessible fixtures in long-term care and high-risk healthcare settings require thermostatic mixing valves. The Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care and related regulations specify maximum outlet temperatures at resident fixtures. TMV valves must be installed, commissioned, and maintained to meet these requirements.
Legionella Risk Management
Legionella pneumophila grows in water systems with temperatures between approximately 25–50°C and in areas of stagnation or biofilm. Healthcare facilities manage this risk through hot water temperature management, recirculation, dead-leg elimination, and outlet flushing protocols — often as part of a formal water management program.
Backflow Prevention Classification
Healthcare facilities are typically classified as high-hazard premises under Ontario municipal backflow bylaws. Reduced-pressure (RP) backflow preventers are required on the water supply. Annual testing and certification is mandatory. The facility must maintain current test certificates for all devices.
Hot Water System Temperature
Best practice guidance and Ontario regulation for long-term care homes requires hot water storage at a minimum temperature (typically 60°C or higher) to inhibit Legionella, with mixing valves at the point of use to prevent scalding. Recirculation systems must maintain temperature throughout the distribution loop.
Infection Control During Construction
Plumbing work in an operating healthcare facility must be conducted in compliance with the facility's infection prevention and control (IPAC) protocols. This may include barriers, dust control, and phased work sequencing. Mechora works within the facility's infection control requirements as directed by facility management.
Ontario Plumbing Code & Permits
All new plumbing work in a healthcare facility is permit-required under the Ontario Building Code. Work must be performed by licensed plumbers. The facility's engineering consultants typically specify systems — Mechora implements and documents the work in compliance with the specified design and the Ontario Plumbing Code.
Why Mechora
Licensed, documented, and ready for the demands of healthcare environments.
