Leak detection and repair in Ontario

Hidden water leaks are one of the more costly plumbing problems in Ontario homes — not because the repair is necessarily expensive, but because undetected leaks accumulate damage quietly over weeks or months before becoming visible. A pinhole leak in a copper supply line concealed inside a wall may produce a water stain on a ceiling below it, a musty smell, or a gradual increase in the water bill long before it causes a visible burst. By that point, the framing and drywall around the pipe have typically been absorbing moisture long enough to develop mould growth, and the repair cost includes remediation work beyond the plumbing fix itself.

The practical challenge with hidden leak detection is finding the leak without causing unnecessary damage to the surrounding finishes. Mechora starts with the least invasive methods — water meter observation, pressure testing, systematic fixture checks and inspection of accessible pipe runs — before recommending access openings. When we identify a probable location, we describe the access approach in writing before proceeding. Many leaks are accessible through existing access panels, from an adjacent room, or through a small targeted opening rather than full wall or floor removal. We repair the leak and describe what access patching (drywall, flooring) is needed so you can arrange that work with appropriate trades.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find a hidden water leak?

We start with a systematic inspection — checking fixtures, supply lines, drain connections, water meter behaviour and visible pipe runs. For suspected in-wall or under-slab leaks, we use professional listening equipment and pressure testing to locate the leak without unnecessary opening of walls. We describe our findings and the approach before any access work begins.

How much wall opening is needed to fix a leak?

We aim to open only what is needed. Many leaks are accessible through small access openings or from existing access panels in adjacent closets or utility spaces. We describe the access required in our written estimate before starting work — you know what to expect before anything is cut.

My water bill is high but I can't find a leak — what do I do?

Turn off all fixtures and watch your water meter for 15 minutes. If the meter dial or digital display continues moving, water is flowing somewhere in the system. A running toilet is the most common cause, but supply line leaks and outdoor tap leaks are also frequent. Call us — we investigate systematically starting with the most common causes.

Can a slow leak cause structural damage?

Yes. Water absorbed into wood framing, drywall and insulation over weeks or months causes mould growth, wood rot and — in serious cases — structural deterioration of wall framing or floor joists. Finding and fixing a hidden leak early is significantly cheaper than repairing the damage after. Mould remediation alone typically costs more than the plumbing repair.

Do you repair after locating the leak?

Yes — we locate and repair. We provide a written estimate for the repair before opening any walls, and we handle the plumbing repair in full. Drywall or flooring patching after access is a separate trade — we describe what access work was done so you can arrange that with your preferred contractor.

Are you licensed for this work in Ontario?

Yes. All leak detection and repair work is performed by licensed, insured plumbers. We carry the appropriate credentials for Ontario plumbing work and can provide documentation on request.
