Commercial Plumbing

Backflow prevention.
Installed, tested and certified.

Ontario requires annual backflow testing for many commercial properties. Mechora installs backflow prevention devices and provides certified testing across the GTA and Ontario.

Protecting the municipal water supply

Backflow prevention protects the municipal water supply from contamination by preventing water from flowing backward from a building's plumbing into the public water main. Backflow can occur due to sudden pressure changes — such as a water main break or high demand event — and can draw contaminants from a building's systems into the public supply.

Ontario municipalities require annual third-party testing and certification for most commercial backflow prevention assemblies. Requirements vary by municipality and device type.

Note: Confirm your municipality's specific requirements — testing frequency and documentation requirements vary by municipality and device type. Mechora provides testing and documentation to support your compliance requirements.

Backflow prevention — common questions

A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed on a building's water supply connection that stops water from flowing backward from the building's plumbing into the municipal water main. Backflow can occur due to pressure changes and can contaminate the public water supply with chemicals, bacteria or other hazards present in the building's plumbing.
Most Ontario municipalities require annual third-party testing and certification of backflow prevention assemblies for commercial properties. Requirements vary by municipality and device type — confirm the specific requirements with your local municipality. Mechora provides testing and documentation to support your compliance requirements.
A failed backflow test means the device did not meet the required performance standards. The device will typically need to be repaired or replaced before a passing test can be issued. Mechora can assess whether repair or replacement is more appropriate, perform the required work, and arrange a re-test.
The required device type depends on the hazard level of the cross-connection — the degree to which contamination could affect the public water supply. High-hazard connections (chemicals, sewage) require more robust devices than low-hazard connections. A plumbing assessment will determine the appropriate device type for your building's use and connection point.
