Common questions about sump pumps and backwater valves

A backwater valve (also called a backflow prevention valve) is installed on your main sewer drain line. It allows sewage to flow out of your home normally but closes automatically if sewage tries to flow back in — which can happen during heavy rain when municipal sewer systems become overloaded. Homes in flood-prone areas or those without a backwater valve are at risk of sewage backup. Many Ontario home insurers require a backwater valve for sewer backup coverage.
Many Ontario municipalities — including parts of the Toronto area — offer rebate programs for backwater valve installation. The availability, amount and eligibility requirements vary by municipality. We recommend checking with your municipality before booking. We can assist with documentation as required.
A typical residential sump pump has a service life of 7 to 10 years, though this varies by brand, quality and how frequently it runs. If your pump is approaching this age, is running constantly, is making unusual noises, or failed to activate during a recent rain event, it should be inspected and likely replaced.
If your primary sump pump fails during a heavy storm — whether from a power outage or mechanical failure — your basement can flood quickly. A battery backup sump pump provides a second layer of protection by continuing to pump water even when your primary pump is offline. It's one of the more practical upgrades for Ontario basements.
Yes. A properly installed battery backup sump pump can pump a significant volume of water on battery power alone — enough to protect your basement through most power outages that coincide with storms. Battery backup systems are tested at installation and should be serviced periodically to ensure the battery holds its charge.
