Yes, PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C are all OBC-compliant for domestic water supply. PEX must use compatible fittings and must not be exposed to UV light. It is widely used in residential and light commercial supply, as well as radiant and hydronic heating systems.
The designations refer to wall thickness. Type K (thickest) is used for underground water service. Type L is the standard for commercial and residential above-ground supply. Type M (thinnest) is used in residential low-pressure applications. Commercial buildings use Type L.
Standard white PVC (DWV) is not pressure-rated and must not be used for water supply. CPVC (cream/light yellow) is a different material that is OBC-approved for hot and cold water supply under pressure. Do not confuse DWV PVC with CPVC.
Ontario municipal water is generally treated to a pH range not aggressive toward copper. Some areas with softer water have seen pinhole corrosion in copper supply lines over time. PEX and CPVC are not affected by water chemistry in the same way. If pinhole leaks have occurred, investigate local water chemistry before replumbing with the same material.
PEX is the most freeze-tolerant — it can expand as ice forms and often survives mild freeze events. Copper, CPVC, and PVC/ABS DWV do not expand and can split if frozen. However, proper freeze protection (insulation, heat trace) is required for all pipe materials — PEX's tolerance is a safety margin, not a substitute for protection.
Yes. ABS (black plastic) is OBC-compliant for DWV applications alongside white PVC DWV. ABS uses its own single-step cement; PVC requires primer and cement. Both are acceptable. Do not mix ABS and PVC without a rated transition cement at the joint.
PEX is commonly used for hydronic heating distribution and radiant systems in commercial buildings, and for smaller-diameter branch supply lines in renovation work. In larger commercial buildings, copper Type L remains dominant for main supply distribution because of its rigidity and compatibility with commercial valves and fittings.
Mechanical rooms typically use copper Type L for domestic water supply, steel or copper for heating supply/return, and cast iron or PVC DWV for floor drains and sanitary connections. PEX is generally not used for main distribution in mechanical rooms because flexibility makes it harder to maintain clean, organized runs expected in a mechanical room.
